Steel Embers & Still Moments: Why Men's Mental Health Matters This June

June in Brooklyn has a specific rhythm. The air starts to hold that familiar, humid weight; the stoops become communal living rooms, and the morning light filters through the plane trees with a golden, syrupy glow. However, beyond the blooming jasmine and the city's hum, June carries a deeper significance for me. It is Men's Mental Health Month, a time to strip away the "grit" and talk about the quiet, often ignored need for stillness in a man's life.
I have always believed that home should be a sanctuary, a place where the outside world fades away. For men, finding that sanctuary is not just about comfort it is about survival. It is about creating rituals that allow us to process the day, breathe deeply, and reconnect with our own spirit.
Men are taught to carry the weight of their problems in silence. We are expected to keep going and not let a hard day show. However, strength held too tightly can become a burden, and the quiet many men live with is not always peace. Sometimes it is pressure with nowhere to go
This month, we want to say something simple and sincere: it is good to rest. It is good to feel. It is good to set down what you have been carrying, even for a moment, and let yourself breathe. Tending to your mind is not a departure from being strong. It is part of how strength endures.
The Anchor in the Storm: 2020 and the Birth of Tranquil Wicks
Tranquil Wicks was founded in the summer of 2021 but I have been working and perfecting my craft since 2018. Then in the spring of 2020. The world came to a halt. Brooklyn, usually a symphony of noise, is eerily silent, broken only by the distant wail of sirens. Like so many others, I found myself navigating a landscape of anxiety and uncertainty that felt impossible to map. During those long, isolating weeks of the COVID lockdown, I needed something to hold onto. I needed a way to stay sane. That is when I turned to the perfecting my craft.

There is a profound, rhythmic peace in the process of candle making. The slow melt of the soy wax, the steady hand required to center a wick, the careful measurement of scents, it became my mental health anchor. In a world that felt like it was spinning out of control, the workshop was the one place where I could dictate the pace. Every pour was an act of intention; every candle was a physical manifestation of a "still moment" I was trying to create for myself.
Starting Tranquil Wicks LLC was not just a business move. It was a philosophical commitment to the idea that we all deserve a way to find our center. The craft saved me, and now my mission is to share that same sense of calm with you.
The Science of Scent: Why a Candle Calms You
There is a reason a familiar scent can steady you before your thoughts even catch up. Smell is the only sense wired directly into the limbic system the part of the brain that governs emotion and memory. Where sight and sound take detours, scent arrives first, speaking to the oldest, instinctive parts of whom we are.

That is why a single breath of cedar or smoke or warm spice can lower your shoulders and slow your pulse. It is not magic. It is biology, gently on your side. When a man who rarely sits still finally lights a candle and lets the scent settle the room, his nervous system is doing quiet, important work shifting from holding on to letting go.

Steel Embers:
Tranquility Forged for Him
This brings me to our Steel Embers collection. When I designed this line, I wanted to create something that felt both powerful and peaceful. The tagline, Tranquility Forged for Him, is a nod to the resilience men carry, and the necessary "forge" of self-care required to keep that strength intact.
The Steel Embers scent profile is unapologetically grounded. It's not sweet or fleeting; it's the smell of smoke, aged wood, and the quiet of a forest at dawn. It's designed for the man who values understated luxury, the kind that doesn't need to shout to be noticed.
We named it Steel Embers because it holds two truths at once. Steel stands for resilience, the quiet durability of a man who shows up day after day. Embers stand for warmth, the soft living glow that remains when the loud flames have settled. Strength and gentleness in the same breath. That is what we wish for every man this June.
Tranquility is not the absence of noise, but the presence of peace.
Lighting a candle from this collection is not just about scenting a room. It is about signaling to your brain that the "work" part of the day is over. It is an invitation to a ritual. Whether you are unwinding after a shift at the hospital, finishing a day of remote work, or simply need ten minutes of prayer and reflection, Steel Embers is there to hold the space for you.
Creating Your Own Ritual of Stillness
How do we actually practice this? It doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, the simpler the ritual, the more likely you are to keep it.
Set the Scene: Find a corner of your home that feels like "yours." It could be a favorite leather chair, a window seat overlooking the street, or even just your bedside table.
The Intentional Light: Don't just flick a lighter. Take a breath. As you light the wick, think of one thing you're grateful for from the day.
Digital Sabbath: For the first fifteen minutes the candle is lit, put your phone in another room. Let the flickering glow be the only "screen" you look at.
Listen to the Silence: Put on a record. Something low. Let the notes of the candle fill the room.

These small acts of stewardship over our own mental health are what build long-term resilience. They are the moments of calm that allow us to show up better for our families, our work, and ourselves.
Finding Your Community at the Market
Mental health can often feel like a solo journey, but it's rooted in community. One of my greatest joys since starting Tranquil Wicks has been meeting you all in person. There is something healing about a face-to-face conversation that a screen just can't replicate.
This summer, you can find me and the full collection at the Bushwick Farmers Market. It's a beautiful place to take a slow weekend walk, grab some fresh produce, and find a scent that speaks to your soul. Come by, say hello, and let's talk about more than just candles. Let's talk about life, Brooklyn, and how we're all doing our best to find a little more peace.

A Note of Gratitude
As we move through June, I want to encourage you to take your happiness seriously. Men's mental health is often framed as a "problem to solve," but I prefer to see it as a "garden to tend." It requires patience, the right environment, and the occasional moment of stillness to truly flourish.
I am deeply grateful for the community that has grown around Tranquil Wicks. From those early, uncertain days in 2020 to the vibrant markets of 2026, your support has been a blessing I do not take for granted.
If you're looking to start your own ritual of calm, or perhaps looking for a thoughtful gift for a man in your life who needs a reminder to breathe, I invite you to explore our collection.
Stay grounded, stay hopeful, and remember: the light is always there, even in the quietest moments.
With peace and gratitude,
Robert Viquez Founder & Candle Artisan, Tranquil Wicks LLC
